24/96 ALAC to FLAC problem

Post by cgroppi » Wed Jan 14, 2009 3:29 am

I am trying to convert some 24/96 ALAC files to FLAC so I can play them on my PC with Foobar2000. I have verified that the files are 24/96 to start with:

afinfo 01\ Sophisticated\ Lady.m4a
File: 01 Sophisticated Lady.m4a
File type ID: m4af
Data format: 2 ch, 96000 Hz, 'alac' (0x00000003) from 24-bit source, 4096 frames/packet
Channel layout: Stereo (L R)
estimated duration: 417.109 sec
audio bytes: 145672826
audio packets: 9776
audio 40042496 valid frames + 0 priming + 0 remainder = 40042496
bit rate: 2793949 bits per second
packet size upper bound: 20824
audio data file offset: 46510
optimized

When I use Max 0.8.1 to convert to FLAC, I get 16 bit/96 kHz files:

file 01\ Sophisticated\ Lady\ .flac
01 Sophisticated Lady .flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 96 kHz, 40042400 samples

Is this a bug, a limitation or is there a setting I am missing to get the FLAC output to be 24 bit/96 kHz?

This is a bug in Max 0.8.1- it should be fixed in the latest unstable build which is available from http://files.sbooth.org
