Holy Crap...Overwhelmed...let start with...

Post by mikegrenwick » Thu Oct 30, 2008 2:17 am

Okay, just beginning my high def digital collection of music. I have been reading about Exact Audio Copy, Lame, VBR, CBR etc...thats how I found Max.

I am wanting to create High Definition music collection using i-Tunes for my player. Size is really not a problem but I am not wanting to do a Lossless format because thats to big.

I am thinking of using the mp3 format which I understand uses the Lame as the encoder (supposedly the best).

Here are my question to start. Under the preferences and format what do I want to select????

I picked mp3 but then it gets into

1. Encoder quality... (Best, Transparent, Portable, Custom)
2. Encoder target... (Quality...Bitrate)
3. Encoding engine quality (Fast, Standard or High)
4. Stereo mode ( Default, Mono, Stereo, Joint Stereo)
5. Quality (10---100)
6. Variable bitrate mode (Standard or Fast)
7. Bitrate ( 32---320)

I know this is alot, so if you don't want to answer can you point me somewhere?

Thanks so much

If you really intend to use your music only with iTunes, you could also consider AAC. It will achieve similar quality for smaller file sizes. Not that MP3 is bad, by any stretch.

MP3 at the transparent preset should be good enough for most uses.

So if I was trying to produce the highest quality mp3's I could, meaning closest to CD quality i can, what settings would I want to use?

With MP3s quality is a subjective issue. For most listening uses the transparent preset will be equivalent to compact disc in terms of sound quality. If you really want the best possible that MP3 has to offer, you could use 320 kbps CBR.

Hello thanks for all the replies, I am under the assumption you are also the developer of the program, so thanks for that as well!

I was under the impression that VBR produced a better quality track then CBR? I keep getting conflicting info.

Is there a tutorial for all this somewhere? A faq maybe?

Heck, while I got you here I tried to use the import to i-Tunes option but kept failing due to something with tags?

Any ideas?

VBR can achieve better results than CBR if compared for the same resulting file sizes, but 320 kbps CBR is the highest quality (with the largest files) you can get with MP3. If you want to keep the compressed file identical to the original CD, use a lossless compressed format like Apple LossLess or FLAC. (Note that iTunes does not play FLAC.)
