How to generate separate tracks from APE/CUE files?

Post by germ » Sun Jan 27, 2008 11:36 pm

Sorry if this has been answered before.

I have a CD image consisting of two files: name.ape and name.ape.cue. When I try to convert this to MP3 with Max (0.7.1), I get a SINGLE MP3 file.

I then found a post that says that the latest beta has fixed it. So tried again using the latest 0.8b version, but I still get the same result. Tried renaming name.ape.cue to name.cue. Same.

What am I missing?

TIA.

Are you opening the cue file and seeing the individual tracks?

Can't open the CUE file....

Max only accepts the .ape file in the Open dialog box. The .que file is in the same folder.

I do not see individual files when I open the .ape file.

You'll need to open the .cue file if you want to split files; use File -> Open (Command-O) instead of the file conversion window and it should work properly.

Still no go...

OK, I got a new CD with .que file. Max now opens it. But does not display any tracks (It gets the title and artist correctly).

.que file looks OK to me in a text editor.

Perhaps I don't understand how to do this in Max. Looked in Help---useless.

In this case, Max only allows me to open the .cue file (the .ape file is dimmed in the open dialog box).

Exactly WHAT is one supposed to do with the two .ape and .cue files in Max?

Still not working...

Post by germ » Sun Feb 03, 2008 10:04 pm

Now I have got another CD. This one has a WavPack and a .cue file. First, I had to capitalize the .WV extension so that Max would open the WavPack file (a bug, I think, as in Mac OS X file name should be case insensitive).

This .cue file opens OK in Max. That is, it recognizes all tracks. This is in contrast to the previous two .cue files I have found, one of them would not open at all, and one of them would not list the individual tracks. So Max needs to improve the parsing of .cue files.

So I have two windows open: The File conversion one with the .WV file selected in it, and the one with the title and tracks (from the .cue file). Now I hit the Convert button and conversion to MP3 begins.

HOWEVER, still only ONE .mp3 file is generated in the Music folder.

This is really frustrating....

Maybe the cue file is non-compliant? Please post it here so I can take a look.

As I alluded to before, you don't need to add any files to the file conversion window. Open the cue file, select the tracks you want, and then click convert. The tracks should be extracted from the file specified in the cue.

Unfortunately, I already deleted that file. If I find such files in the future, I will post them here.
Open the cue file, select the tracks you want, and then click convert. The tracks should be extracted from the file specified in the cue.
OK, this works fine now. Thanks for your help (this is not intuitive at all....).

However, the file name looks strange: It starts with a number (ex. 6402288), then continues normally.

This was a bug I thought I fixed but it may persist. Which version are you using?

More .cue files that don't work

Post by germ » Sun Feb 17, 2008 10:21 pm

I am using 0.8b.

Here are some CDs that don't work. CDs are ripped as .flac. Each CD comes with two .cue files, called
<CD title>-.flac Image.cue
<CD title>-.flac Noncompliant.cue

There are also two corresponding .wav cue files (not sure why). The guy who ripped these seems to have done a very thorough job. Anyway, when I load the first .cue file in Max, no tracks appear. When I load the second one, tracks appear but have bogus durations.

Here are the files.

I too have discovered a cue file that displays Artist and Album title but no track listing. Additionally, if I after viewing this information I close the window, there is nothing in the main window to convert.

I'm not sure if this is due to a malformed cue or the parsing Max 0.8.1 is doing, but if it's any help here is a copy paste of the cue (hope the gremlins aren't stripped as I paste):

Are the WAV files 44.1 kHz?

Ha... I found the issue. The FILE field specified the correct filename but with a .wav extension. The file was actually of an .ape extension. Changing this in the cue fixed the problem. Looking at the above examples, I see .flac's in the FILE field, which may also be the cause in those cases.

Kudos for your fantastic app, sbooth!

Glad it's working. I need to generate more descriptive error messages in this case. Can you file a bug?
