Replay Gain and ALAC files

Post by pl_svn » Fri May 04, 2012 10:38 am

seems Tags does calculate RG for Apple Lossless files but... it is not retained: re-open the file and all RG fields are empty

but, and this is the real issue, Apple Lossless file processed this way will not play in iTunes if stored on a NAS that acts as "iTunes Server"
the very same files plays fine if directly added to iTunes Library, I believe because they are actually copied so it's not actually the very same file

I have no idea if RG does make any sense in Apple Lossless files (it never shows even when transcoding from FLAC) so... this is either a bug or, if not, RG calculation should be disabled for ALAC

Are you saying that ALAC files edited with Decibel don't work properly in iTunes unless they are re-added?

a) a folder containing ALAC files on the desktop
b) open *Tags* and chose "Calculate Replay Gain" (spinning wheel then RG values are added)
c) Save and quit Tags (but if I re-open the files in Tags, RG values are empty <- bug?)

d) move the folder to a NAS (that also acts as iTunes Server)
e) in iTunes, under "Shared", select the NAS
f) now look for those files you just edited in *Tags*
g) double-click on a file and... it won't play :-/

h) take the folder from the NAS and import those files into iTunes (with "copy files" option enabled)
i) they do play just fine
