If you start with a 24-bit file, convert it to ALAC, and then back to the original format, it will only be a 16-bit file.
DO NOT USE iTUNES FOR THESE CONVERSIONS!!
Get a Windows machine and run dBpoweramp instead. I know that one works. I haven't tried Max nor XLD, so I can't speak to those.
