Would you mind posting the output from afinfo?

Maybe upload a snipped of the file (30sec) somewhere so everyone can fiddle with it. It seems that the file is somehow broken, but then the question is why dbPoweramp could transcode it without a problem.
(you can trim the file with Audacity for example)

It seems like Core Audio doesn't like the file for some reason, since afinfo can't open it. I believe iTunes uses QuickTime for playback which is a semi-separate part of Mac OS X than Core Audio, which explains why iTunes can play it but CA cannot.

One idea that just popped into my head to try- you could possible "convert" the file to a WAVE file using iTunes. There are certain ALAC files that Core Audio can't open but iTunes can- and telling iTunes to convert them to ALAC creates files that are Core Audio compatible.

That is why I put convert in quotes. The audio won't change at all, but the file will be recreated on disk and have a slightly different internal structure so that Core Audio might be able to read it. In iTunes, open the Preferences and then in General select Import Settings. Ensure that WAV Encoder and All Automatic are selected. Then, find the file in your iTunes library, right-click on it, and select Create WAV version. The resultant file might be playable by Decibel, but will contain the same audio as the original.

In that case maybe iTunes didn't convert the WAVE properly, because the bit depth shouldn't have changed. What does Decibel show as the bit depth in the Inspector?

firstly, when i double click the file to play it decibel says:

the format was not recognized. files extention may not match the file type.

it then plays anyway. bit depth = 16

any ideas?

thanks

Two things I would try- 1) Check the source bit depth and sample rate in iTunes, and make sure they are what you expect, and 2) Check your conversion settings in iTunes.

(1) In iTunes, select the track and then pull down 'Get Info' from the File menu.
(2) In iTunes, open the Preferences and then in General select Import Settings. Ensure that WAV Encoder and All Automatic are selected. Then, find the file in your iTunes library, right-click on it, and select Create WAV version.
