ReplayGain - please explain

Post by Alberto » Fri May 06, 2011 1:02 pm

Someone please explain how exactly ReplayGain is working with Decibel.
I was reading this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_Gain
but I still don't know e. g. which client is determining the levels of the tracks. Is it Decibel on the fly before playing the tracks or do I need iTunes for this?
What means "Preamplification" and how can I use the slider?
Can Decibel work together with http://www.mani.de/ivolume/index.html

It's not possible to generate RG on the fly since the full track (track gain) or album (album gain) has to be analyzed. You need files which already have the RG data in their metadata, so Decibel will read and apply it on playback.

RG is calculated to -89dB reference level. With preamplification you can change that for playback. If you rise it it's more likely to get clipping, so there's the option to reduce the preamp.

@sbooth: do you plan to include RG scanning? That'd be awesome!

Thanks Callisto for the explanation!
What clients are best for determining the RG-Metadata in files? iTunes or others?

iTunes does not write RG metadata. It uses its own implementation "Sound Check" and writes the tag "iTunNORM"
I do not know of any program on OS X which does native RG scanning. But you linked to iVolume which converts the tags from iTunes to RG data. So that should work, I guess.
edit: Last one is wrong, iVolume just uses the RG algorithm instead of iTunes' but still writes it to iTunNORM. I doubt Decibel supports iTunNORM.
The RG wiki article lists some. Seems like Rapid Evolution runs on OS X (DDL)

That would be nice if Decibel would support iTunNORM. A new feature request?

I've added the feature request to the list.

Is this implemented now (1.2.5) or is it still on the list?

Me too: iTunNORM suport in Decibel. All my iTunes libraries on Mac are normalized by iVolume.
