All noise when encoded
I attempted to rip R.E.M.'s "The Best of R.E.M. - In Time 1998-2003" and every track was 100% noise.
Ripping other CD's so far seem fine, no issues.

Re: All noise when encoded
I have a CD that does this as well. Not quite 'all noise', but definitely very very wrong.
When I try to use Paranoia-ripping on The Necks' "Chemist" to produce AIFF and/or m4a I just get junk.
Using comparison ripper works OK. iTune will rips it OK as well.
So, what's going on?
UPDATE: I have encountered a few more discs that come out with very high bit rates in m4a, and with the exception of Merzbow and High Rise, the noise that causes the lack of compressibility isn't meant to be there. Again, this suggests that the particular problem that I'm encountering is occuring at the ripping stage rather than the encoding stage.

Re: All noise when encoded
Just got the same pure noise result on Chris Cornell's Euphoria Morning when trying to encode my typical FLAC configuration, cdparanoia, etc.. Been using Max quite successfully for a couple years on a couple hundred CD's without error. Using 0.7.1 on a Mac Mini G4 1Gig RAM OS 10.4.9. Tried encoding a different CD the same way right after. Encoded flawlessly. Tried a couple different encoding formats for the Cornell disk. Nothing seems to work.
I checked and don't believe the CD has any DRM...
Any ideas?
Many, many thanks for your excellent product and support to the Mac community.
Cubro
Update: next day tried to encode with iTunes to 320 CBR mp3. Ripped fine! So there's certainly no DRM issue or weird interaction between that particular disk and my hardware configuration.

Re: All noise when encoded
Could it be that this 'noise' thing a product of the CDParanoia process?

Certainly a reasonable suggestion but then why does a different disc ripped right after this failed effort encode perfectly with exactly the same settings?chux wrote:Could it be that this 'noise' thing a product of the CDParanoia process?
Re: All noise when encoded
I just got a new intel-mac and fired max up to convert some music i have written from aiff to mp3 (ie not from a CD) and i got straight white noise output too.
so its prolly not the cd paranoia.

I'm guessing you're correct but this level of troubleshooting will likely require our benefactor'sjonnyfive wrote:I just got a new intel-mac and fired max up to convert some music i have written from aiff to mp3 (ie not from a CD) and i got straight white noise output too.

Re: All noise when encoded
Actually after posting above, I realized I'm kind of a tard. I was trying to encode a 24-bit aiff. I forgot to dither the file down to 16-bits before running it through max. After dithering the file first the conversion worked fine. Sorry 'bout that. So maybe your right about the ripper after all.
BTW I love max, thank you very much all you coder types for writing and maintaining such an indispensable utility.
