I've been playing with ReplayGain in r812 a bit and it looks good! A few comments: * Scanning is rather slow. It seems to be a lot slower than iTunes for instance. Any ideas what could be the cause? * Have you thought about having an option for a low-priority background/idle-time RG scan? As long as...

"Bitrate: Lossless" for AAC and MPC

It seems Play r812 falls back to "Lossless" as bitrate in the 'Track Information' window when it can't establish the bitrate. This means formats like AAC and MPC (and possibly others) are incorrectly mentioned as being "lossless". I think a fall back to "unknown" would be better.

Play has a "Most popular" list in the Browser. I assume it bases this on playcount of each track. When in "Most popular" view, maybe a column with the playcount for each file would be nice. Then one could sort on popularity...

When a track automatically switches over to the next track in the queue, the name of the window only gets updated for MP3's. Not for FLAC, Ape, AAC, Ogg and MPC where it'll revert to just "Play".

OK, I did some further digging into ReplayGain tagging standards and it's quite a mess actually. RVA2 in ID3v.4 is superior over RVAD in ID3v2.3. Because some apps like the power of RVA2 but still use ID3v2.3 they revert to using RVA2-style data in RVAD tags. :? Not pretty, but it works. You might c...

I've been playing around with all different ways of storing RG values. Can you confirm that MP3's made by Max do not store these Lame-RG values? I can see them in Play in files made from a Lame command-line, not in MP3's made with Max. Do you see this as well? Should Max be forced to add these Lame ...

Good. Just as for Sound Check, it won't hurt using RVA2 as well. Often the data is there already. A number of popular Linux and Windows applications use the RVA2 field to store this data. Especially switchers might have libraries full of files with these values scanned and stored already. That's why...

Some small remarks, not all essential for 0.1 but maybe worth considering: * In the "track information" window, display when a file has VBR. A bitrate of 288,000 gives it away a bit but the use of VBR should usually be easily detectable from the Xing/Lame tag. Something like "288 kbps (VBR)" would b...

ReplayGain in Play

I've spun this off from this topic . I've just posted r722 which changes a few things: I've added preliminary replay gain support . It is preliminary because while the gains are read from files and implemented in the player, they are not settable. At some point in the future they will be but I just ...

Because the whole FAAD discussion is way too big and off-topic for this occasion I opened this topic on the possible use of FAAD . As it is, I don't see the FAAD question play a role for releasing 0.1. I think first priority now is to get a reasonable working player out. As much as I'd like to have ...

Using FAAD in Play?

In this topic ... Regarding gapless AAC , I'm not sure this is likely with the CoreAudio AAC decoder. Perhaps if I wrote my own AAC decoder (using faad?) this would be an option. Currently Play supports gapless for LAME MP3, Vorbis, FLAC, PCM formats, and Apple Lossless. FAAD is actually a pretty de...

I would prefer to see in the Format column only the label that is most often used and that is familiar to the average user, even when it would be technically not entirely correct or complete: "MP3", "AAC (m4a)", "FLAC", Ogg/FLAC, Ogg/Vorbis. More correct and detailed format information about the fi...

Is there a specific reason to have 'Stream/Track information' and 'Edit Metadata' as two separate forms/windows? Most programs use a single option showing both editable and non editable metadata. In a way, number of channels or bitrate is a form of metadata as well, though un-editable. There is a r...
