So does that mean that Max doesn't work reliably on drives with hardware cache? Max should work fine on drives with hardware caches, but there is a possibility for errors to be introduced in certain cases. For example, if paranoia detects a scratch and asks for a re-read of that sector, in all like...

drive cache buffers

Max uses the raw disk nodes for reading, which bypass the filesystem buffer cache. (i.e., instead of /dev/disk1 Max uses /dev/rdisk1) However, Max does not currently disable the hardware cache cache.
