I haven't tried with other codecs, but when ripping, Max stops working when it begins to encode to MP3. It doesn't freeze up, but all the files to be encoded are kept in queue.

That would be no problem for me. freeDB didn't really have a consistent genre taxonomy nor would the composers usually correct. If I did use them, I'd trade them for Musicbrainz's preciseness.

Separate, I suppose. Tag's interface is so wonderfully simple. The Max interface has enough on its hands with so many formats, but that's another topic (and damn if I haven't been trying to come up with a solution - oy. It's difficult). Maybe just have a simple "Open completed conversions in Tag" Ap...

I just did a quick test using "Maximum" and "Medium" quality for AAC on a WAV, and there wasn't any difference in file size or bitrate between the two. Did anyone on the Core Audio mailing list ever get back to you, Stephen?

The two WAV outputs you should be looking at are libsndfile's WAV (Microsoft) and Core Audio's WAVE . For libsndfile's implementation, use the "Signed 16 bit PCM" setting. For Core Audio's implementation, use "Linear PCM, 16 bit little endian signed integer". These are standard settings and should h...

Max's comparison ripper rips a section of a track multiple times, compares the multiple rips, and if they're the same, then the ripper moves on to the next section. If they're not the same then that means that one of the multiple rips has glitches in the data which could mean the CD is scratched, so...

The results wouldn't have been any better unless your CD was scratched. The upcoming version of Max will have a secure ripper which is better than iTunes' ripper.

Tag can rename files based on tags and tag files based on the filename. See the Tools menu.

A "metadata editor" seems rather ambiguous to me. A "metadata editor" in the context of audio files edits the tags of an audio file (e.g., Artist, Title, Album, etc.). Can it edit ID3 data? No. It can only edit Vorbis comments (for FLAC and Ogg Vorbis files) and APEv2 tags (for Monkey's Audio and W...

I've tested three CDs and on all of them Max has gotten an error 33% into the last track, saying "An error occurred while ripping tracks from the disc 'Album name'. Unable to read from the CD." None of them are Enhanced. One has 4 tracks, one has 9, and one has 11. There's no need to go through the ...

No, not at all. Converting from ALAC to ALAC is a lossless conversion.

In Max's preferences, you can choose which formats you want to convert the FLAC files to. Use the "Convert Files..." menu option in the Files menu to select the FLAC files.

Max can't handle Enhanced CDs (CDs with data and music) at the moment. The developer's working on a new ripping engine which I think might fix the problem. Until then don't rip Enhanced CDs with Max.

From the SACD Wikipedia article : The most popular of the three types, hybrid discs include an audio CD "Red Book" layer compatible with Compact Disc players, dubbed the "CD layer," and a 4.7 GB SACD layer, dubbed the "HD layer." So the "CD layer", which is playable in standard CD players , doesn't ...
