Directory root is where I have them go, no matter which directory I choose as output (and I'm the one seemingly constantly changing directory depending on which drives I am dealing with).

Nuts. Will try to remember the CDs I orignally had issues with. One I tried today with success using paranoia and not with comaprison was for a fact one of the original batch.

Will play more this evening.

I can confirm it's the comparison rip setting preventing the reading. As I reported earlier, discs read fine with other apps were not read with Max. After the previous couple comments I went back and tried paranoia with no problems.

I was afraid of that. A total PITA too often for me. I'm the guy that went on and on a couple days ago about a feature request for options in output location handling. So I guess I just have to ask: If file names can be saved when output is to the same location, why can't they be saved when going to...

FIle names not surviving conversion/decoding?

Of the five sets of FLACs (five separate posters on USENET, pretty sure they were Windows/EAC encoded) I decoded to AIFF, only one resulting set of AIFFs had the proper names. All the other sets had names of Unknown Track.aif, etc. All the "Unkown" FLACs decoded in xACT with their names intact. I wo...

make more flexible?

I am very much appreciating the changes so as to choose different outcome formats. Much more useful to me. However, with more use comes a nother bothersome issue: Output Location. That is, where I want things to end up varies as much as how I want them to end up. At any given time I am working with ...

Thanks for the explanation re: difficulty with "just fill the cache with junk" strategies.

I'm sure it's not possible or you would have done it, but I'd appreciate knowing why the whole "filling the cache" thing can't somehow be combined with cdparanoia: fill cache then call cdparanoia, take the part in cdparanoia where the cache is filled and "change" that setting to something tiny, etc....

Not sure if OK with Steve but you might be able to do it yourself. I've done so with iTunes-LAME and LameBrain before that. Drill down (right-click Max and Open Package Contenets, root around) until you find the executable and replace with what you want.

I'm getting totally random, but consistent, inability to read. Of 10 discs I randomly chose (all pristine on the surface and easily read by Finder, iTunes, xACT, etc.) 2 were repeatedly unable to be read. Of the 8 that were read, 2 took more than 20 secs. to be read.

FWIW,

Sad to see that now I know why it wasn't done before. But hopefully it's a step in the right direction.

Again, thanks for the work.

I did start on my own secure cd ripper from scratch a few months back (using simple, but effective reading and hashing of sectors), but then I got so swamped with work that I put this project aside. Maybe I'll take it back up and see what I can do.
Great news, Scott.

I like the Compact Disk menu. As for the clunky effect of the Open dialog, coulld you have in effect 2 different "Opens" - standard Open (Command-O) and Open Special (or some such) (Option-Command-O)? As for alternate menu terms ... Special Encode Special Conversion Or a whole 'nother tack - somethi...

Holy crap! Well, that's all I really gots to say. You folk, the Tag&Max/Cog team(s) are the greatest. Seldom have I *SO* wanted to pay for something. What y'all are doing is wonderful. Nothing but. If you insist on being free, might I ask you offer a cause/need for which I could throw some dinero? (...
