Tagging aiff

Post by KeithL » Sat Jan 19, 2008 6:30 pm

Sorry if this has been covered before.
How do you tag aiff files?
I have no problems when using iTunes.
Max seems to give very limited information.

There is no real standard for tagging AIFF files. I'm not sure if iTunes stores the information in its internal database or if it writes a nonstandard chunk to the file that contains the metadata- I've never checked. The closest thing I've seen is a WAV file with an 'id3 ' chunk containing ID3v2 tags.

Thanks for the reply.

If I scroll through the data from SlimServer I see my AIFF/WAV files ripped with iTunes have:
title, artist, album, track, year, genre, format, comment, duration, volume adjustment, bit rate, sample rate, sample size, file length, date modified, url, id3v220.

This seems quite comprehensive. AIFF files ripped with MAX have title, album, track only.

Maybe iTunes writes an ID3v2 tag to AIFFs. If I get a chance I'll check it out.

Report back if you have any luck! Wouldn't mind knowing how to do the tags myself.
Watch with headrest dvd player and get your veggies with Breville juicers reviews.

That's because there are no ID3 tags for AIFF files. There is no designated space for them in the header of the file.

I would recommend converting them to MP3 using iTunes to play on your MP3-players, then deleting the lossy copies after transfer (unless you need them further).
