AAC+ (HE-AAC) support in Max?

Post by samradio » Fri Aug 01, 2008 2:13 am

I just discovered Max, and have been looking for a tool like this on Mac for a long time. Thanks, sbooth, for your work.

I'm curious if you might add support for encoding/transcoding AAC+, or HE-AAC anytime soon? It's apparently quite good as a lossy format for streaming at a high quality. It's not supported by iTunes yet, or for that matter, by Windows Media Player on PC's, but Winamp on Windows and VLC on the Mac play it. Nothing that I've found on the Mac encode/transcode it yet, that I can tell. There's a great write-up on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HE-AAC

Regardless, thanks for this tool. Can't believe I haven't discovered this before.

Are you aware of any free HE-AAC encoders?

No free encoders that I've found on the Mac...I don't think you can encode it with VLC, but I think Winamp has the ability to encode it on Windows, though I haven't tried since I'm a Mac user almost exclusively...so good question. When I found out about it I googled for something that could encode HE-AAC, but couldn't find one. I think that's due to copyright/licensing restrictions...at least that's my guess. Max is such a cool too, I was hoping you might have an idea where it could be. But maybe somebody else has spotted one somewhere?

I'll keep looking...

3GPP released a free reference encoder for HE-AACv2, which apparently is pretty good. You can download the source here:

According to this thread, the reference encoder might need a few tweaks to be more useful:

Someone released a Mac OS X binary (and XCode project) based on the 3GPP encoder here:

FAAC is a free AAC encoder which supports HE-AACv2, although it says on the website its quality isn't very good, I guess:

mp4tools has an HE-AACv2 encoder, although I believe it is just an implementation of the 3GPP encoder:

Finally, Kostya is working on an AAC encoder for the ffmpeg project, I believe. Information is here, and might include links to code, I'm not sure:
