There is nothing to install. Max is a self-contained application. Just download it and use it. The current version of Max works fine on Mac OS X 10.6.8: see http://forums.sbooth.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2556

I've installed it, but that's as far as I get. When I go to my finder and double click the app, the MAX icon appears in my tray but there is no window. I must be missing a step?

That is correct, Max does not have an initial window at startup. But you will see Max's menus appear in the menu bar.

OK, so what is the process if I want to rip a cd or convert an existing file? Sorry to be so obtuse. It's just not that intuitive to me.

1. In Preferences you set what you want to be the application behavior, the output, the encoding, the ripper, the tagging, the file format and naming, etc.

2. For ripping a CD you insert a CD.
With regards to obtaining metadata you may also want to have a look at the Get iTunes Metadata script: http://forums.sbooth.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1930

3. For converting files you choose "Convert Files..." from the File menu.

Or drop the file(s) to be converted onto Max's icon. That works with individual sound files (.flac etc.) and also with the .cue file of a pair (.cue/.flac etc.).

I also have 10.6.8 and the Max install files I have tried open up in Terminal, and then crash before the program can install or start up...

What do you mean with "install files"? As noted before in this thread, there are no Max install files. The download is a .tar.bz2 archive. If the archive is not expanded automatically (depends on the settings in your browser), double-clicking the archive will expand it. The result will be the "Max-0.9.1" folder with Max and additional files. Drag the folder to where you want it (e.g., the /Application folder) and start using Max. Double-clicking Max will launch the application. There will be no initial window, you can see Max menus appearing in the menu bar when you launch Max.
