Lame standard setup

Post by jules » Wed Feb 25, 2009 11:07 am

Hi,

just a short question for clarification since Max doesn't allow you to pass the exact command line to Lame:

Does the standard "transparent" setting mean "-V 2 --vbr-new"? Which would be great... :D

thx

Don't know about the "-new" switch. One FAQ out there says:
The switch --vbr-new, which enabled a superior VBR mode in LAME 3.97 and some previous versions, is no longer needed with LAME 3.98 as it is now the default VBR mode. However, if you're still using LAME 3.97 or older, you have to add --vbr-new to your commandline to use that mode.

Maybe that would correspond to the "Encoding Engine Quality" which is set to "High" (but greyed out) when "Transparent" is selected in Max. Maybe not.

But everything else definitely fits that profile. As you can see in the sheet where you configure the format, the "Transparent" setting in Max is "Quality" based not bitrate-based, and the target bitrate is ~190kbps VBR, and the "Varibale bitrate mode is "fast". All that is right for -V 2.

Thanks. You are correct, --vbr-new is only required previously to Lame 3.98 - I wasn't too sure which Lame version is used by Max but I'm going to try the latest svn-build anyway...

Well done to HA, then.

The latest unstable version is using 3.97. From the menubar:
