24 bit / 96 khz FLAC -> ALAC Issues

Post by stulevine » Sat Feb 07, 2009 4:40 pm

I know this is a repeat of an issue reported in posts from 2006 and 2007. However, since I started using MAX about a month ago I've encountered some similar issues when attempting to convert 24 bit / 96 khz FLAC to ALAC. Instead of producing similar sized 24 bit / 96 khz ALAC file, I get a HUGE 16 bit / 44.1 khz ALAC file that is basically unplayable. In my current setup I'm using Quicktime 7.6 and Mac OS X 10.5.6 on a Macbook Pro (Intel) with MAX installed. Can you shed some light on this matter?

As an interim solution to play these files in iTunes on my Mac Mini music server I have to convert them to AIFF 24 bit and while that works fine the files are huge and one album on average takes up to 2+ Gb. The other annoying thing is all the Meta data has to be painfully re-entered since it is not transfered from the original 24 bit FLAC files (which were purchased on HDTracks.com).
