How to convert into low resolutions with Max?

Post by adammedien » Wed Oct 01, 2008 9:04 am

I just tryed out Max and have a basic question. Since I need low resolutions (e.g. alaw 8 Khz 8 Bit) quiet often I want to convert into those formats with Max. Somehow there seems to be no possibility to change the bitrate and the KHz rate. I can see the input box but it is gray and can not be used. So I always end up with 44,1 Khz / 16 Bit. Do I need to install anything else (codecs) beside the Max software?

Max doesn't currently support resampling. You can try the command-line tool sox for this.

I haven't tried Sox, looks very useful though. I have been using the 30-day, full-featured eval of Adobe Audition. Very nice app, quite large though if that matters to ya. But it will do up/downsampling and just about anything else you could ever need. For you though, 30 days might not let you tackle all your needs during that time. It's about 350 bucks for the full version.

Sox is looking much better isn't it?

OK. Adobe only works on the PC. I need something for audio conversion on the Mac, which seems to be quiet difficult :(

sox does work on 10.5, but I would recommend using MacPorts to install it because it is much simpler than installing the desired components yourself.

Thanks for your advice! I have never used command line software so far. Is it safe? Or could I screw up my system with this?

It's just as safe as any other software- in the case of SoX, you should be fine. I actually prefer command line software for certain tasks- I find myself to be very efficient with a shell.
