flac>>>mp3/aac best method?

Post by grgasca » Wed Apr 30, 2008 10:03 pm

Hi guys

Simple question: Which of the following methods is better to preserve sound quality in a flac to mp3/aac conversion?

A. Just convert it with the "convert files..." tool in max.
B. Extract the audio with Xact to aiff/wav and then encode it with max to mp3/aac.

Hard question: What's your take in mp3 vs aac? I've always heard that in spec aac was better but because of the so many years LAME has been in development mp3 still has better results. (think high bitrate only)

Thank you in advance

No difference. So A is preferable, since it's simpler to do.

Yes, there are notes specifically on that on the Wikipedia page for AAC:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_A ... s_over_MP3

I doubt LAME has better results, although I think it would be true to say that because a lot of time and effort has been put into LAME it is about as good as an MP3 encoder can be. That's to say it's about the same, or not significantly worse, than a good AAC encoder at the bitrates you're probably interested in for almost all samples. In practice, it doesn't really matter which codec you use, if your bitrates are in excess of 128kbps or so.

To expand on that -- check the multiformat listening test carried out by Roberto Amorin at 128kbps:

There's really very little difference between all those codecs there. The difference between the top four is scarcely statistically significant.

Simply because they are all much of a muchness, people have now moved to testing at low bitrates such as 64kbps, where it seems new codecs such as Ogg Vorbis and Nero AAC can be heard to be better:

Thank you so much. I'm going to use AAC since I only use macs, it produces slightly smaller files, and nowadays there are a lot of good DAPs that support it. The current High Quality recomendation in the wiki of hydrogenaudio (http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php ... C_encoders) is 160kbps VBR but I Will do 192kbps VBR just to be safe in my paranoid mind.

Loving "Max" and hoping "Play" gets to be a full fledged player.
Keep up the good work Sbooth lots of mac users rely on you guys.

All the main Windows apps can do AAC as well as ALAC.

xACT has done flac/shn/ape/aiff/wav > LAME mp3 for probably a year now
