No query MusicBrainz anymore with v0.8

Post by bootlegger » Fri Apr 11, 2008 10:00 am

I installed Max v0.8 yesterday and it worked perfectly with a few CD's. No problem at all.

But today I can't get any information from MusicBrainz.
So I tried the v0.7.1 again and the query works. But only with v.0.7.1
No way with the new v0.8

What happened? I didn't change anything and no port is blocked.

Did you delete the Preferences file using the script that came with 0.8? If not, you have to do that.

Thanks Nubben,

yes I did. (doubleklick "Delete Preferences" from v0.8) Still the same! But the cdinfo is shown on top of the window (Compact Disc eoT7zl.......). "ZZ Top - Afterburner" should be known by MusicBrainz.
Yesterday, when v0.8 was working proper I ripped a few Douple-CDs and used the option CD No. 1 of 2 and 2 of 2. Now I see CD: "1" of "?". This is not shown in v.0.7.1. But I deleted the Preference file again after using v0.7.1 so v0.8 should work. I doesn't. Is there another file I have to delete?
I can't understand, because yesterday night v0.8 worked so good. This morning not anymore.

(doubleklick "Delete Preferences" from v0.8) = v 0.8

--> I tried it again.

The only way seems to be:
a) use v0.7.1 to get connected with MusicBrainz and save the cdinfo
b) quit v0.7.1
c) eject the CD
d) start v0.8
e) start the CD again
f) v0.8 is taking the cdinfo from v0.7.1
g) ripp and encode

The "1 of ?" disc bug has been there since 0.8 beta I think (only discovered Max when it was in 0.8 beta). I simply fill in a 1 or 2 or whatever instead of the "?", and (important) hit Enter/Return after you have filled in a number.

Personally I think MusicBrainz sucks bigtime. I use iTunes to get the CD Info (using the script included in the downloaded .tar file). But, instead of putting the script in a Max folder under Scripts I have renamed it "Send CD Info to Max" and put it in User/Library/iTunes/Scripts. Works like a charm.

I tend to tag all my files in iTunes anyways so I rip the CDs to Apple Lossless using Max and have it automatically transfer it to a "Max" playlist in iTunes and my "lossless" library. From there i'll let iTunes do all the work - tagging, album art etc, and when done convert to AAC for transfer to my "lossy" main library.

Works for me.

This issue is not a bug in Max per se, but the way MusicBrainz handles requests depending on the protocol. Max 0.7.1 used the older MusicBrainz RDF web service, which would backdoor to FreeDB to get disc information it was lacking. Max 0.8 uses the newer XMLWebService which does not have the FreeDB backup.

I'm not sure what the solution to this is, as the RDF web service is deprecated. See http://musicbrainz.org/doc/libmusicbrainz

This is hard to understand, because the v0.8 was working yesterday.

My system is OS X 10.5.2. I did not have any problem with Max v0.7.1, I think.
Why shouldn't I use v0.7.1 ?

Originally Max used FreeDB. This was changed at a time when FreeDB was in trouble and there were strong indications that FreeDB would not survive. But FreeDB did survive and MusicBrainz really sucks. Could there be an option in a next version of Max to choose between MusicBrainz and FreeDB?

And maybe make such an option more sophisticated: If the preferred database does not have the disc information, try the other one.

In Leopard, v0.7.1 will crash when trying to convert to MPEG4 formats.

RonaldPR,

all I want is ripping and decoding my Audio-CD's into the best mp3 format 320 kbit on harddisc with taggs and covers, not only for iTunes.
I don't care about ipod or mp4.
I see good results using v0.7.1. But is it true? So far I didn't listen to all the ripps I made, just a few. And they were good.

Nothing crashed so far.
What is the problem with v0.7.1 beside crashing converting in mp4 ?

Thanks Nubben, works fine. A lot better than the Max built-in search.

Also, would it be possible to have "Query MusicBrainz" work for non compact disc sources (FLAC, etc.)?

I believe Play can do that - File > Edit Metadata > Search MusicBrainz
