Are you certain the discs exist in the MusicBrainz database? You can check the disc's ID by referring to the title of the .cdinfo file Max creates for it.

I note a similar problem
With 0.8b nothing is returned from MusicBrainz or anything else.
With 0.71 I get German tags (much inferior to MBrainz)
This is a multi CD set, in this example disc 7 of 7. Some discs work, others do not.
The id generated is: “Ja4dKeOr44ctjKLbT_t9a34KPmI-.cdinfo
It is in the MusicBrainz database as 480d9629-1a5e-4784-ab23-af6be7e7f557

Could it be that Max is generating the wrong id?
Here is the info on this disc:

The Complete String Quartets (Alban Berg Quartett) (disc 7)
MBID: 480d9629-1a5e-4784-ab23-af6be7e7f557
Permanent link: http://musicbrainz.org/release/480d9629 ... 7f557.html
Fancy link: Click here for a fancy link to this release
XML: http://mm.musicbrainz.org/ws/1/release/480d9629-
Database Row ID: 577021

BTW, I note this for about half the discs in this set.
Thanks.

There previously was an Intel-only bug in the disc id generation that I fixed. I've just uploaded a new unstable version (r1333). Does the problem persist in the new unstable?

Downloaded the newest unstable 0.8b 1333. It generates the same disk id, and returns nothing from musicbrainz.
It it is helpful, this is an intel machine.
Thanks for your very quick reply.

BTW, is there an easy way to check the build of each version? about just shows the version (.8b), but I had to be extra careful in making sure that I was using the right executable.

I very much appreciate any insight you can offer.

Are these multisession discs as well?

No, a boxed set, but not, multi-session. I think the issue not be with MAX (sorry) but with the disc id not being in the MusicBrainz database. That is, there is no disc id icon on the discs in this set that have unsuccessful lookups in MusicBrainz. Is this necessary for MAX to find it, or is the MBID in theory sufficient?
You caught me as I was trying to figure out how to edit in a disk id.
Am I understanding, correctly that Max requires that a diskid be in the database?
Again, thanks so much

Max does require that a disc exists in the MusicBrainz database to retrieve metadata. The disc ID will always be calculated, though, regardless of the presence or absence of the disc in the database.

Can you post the disc ID of one of the discs that is failing the lookup?

Thanks for getting back so quickly.
Just to be clear, the disk is in the musicbrainz dataset. The disk id and the musicbrainz id to the disc is a couple of messages above.
Here they are again, but more info is up a couple of messages:
The id generated is: “Ja4dKeOr44ctjKLbT_t9a34KPmI-.cdinfo
It is in the MusicBrainz database as 480d9629-1a5e-4784-ab23-af6be7e7f557
Thanks,
Eric

Is it possible the disc in the MusicBrainz database is from a different pressing? This happens quite frequently, and if it is a rare disc it's possible your version of the disc hasn't been submitted. Can you post the CD's TOC here? You can determine the TOC from the command line (in Terminal) by using drutil:

Code: Select all

drutil -device internal toc
assuming you have an internal drive.

Here is the entire output of drutil

Vendor Product Rev
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857 HBEA

First session: 1
Last session: 1
First track: 1
Disc type: 0 (CD-DA, or CD-ROM with first track in Mode 1)
Last track: 8
Lead-out: 71:50.51
Session 1, Track 1: 00:02.30 2ch audio, no pre-emphasis, digital copy prohibited
Session 1, Track 2: 09:26.70 2ch audio, no pre-emphasis, digital copy prohibited
Session 1, Track 3: 18:56.57 2ch audio, no pre-emphasis, digital copy prohibited
Session 1, Track 4: 30:37.06 2ch audio, no pre-emphasis, digital copy prohibited
Session 1, Track 5: 39:54.56 2ch audio, no pre-emphasis, digital copy prohibited
Session 1, Track 6: 48:18.40 2ch audio, no pre-emphasis, digital copy prohibited
Session 1, Track 7: 63:24.50 2ch audio, no pre-emphasis, digital copy prohibited
Session 1, Track 8: 65:27.65 2ch audio, no pre-emphasis, digital copy prohibited

I hope that helps. What may be helpful is that of the 7 discs in this boxed set, all 7 have entries in the musicbrainz database, but three discs, which return no information to Max (3,6 and 7), have no seperate disc id. The 4 which do are found. All are in the database. I don't have a clear understanding of the relationship between disc id, musicbrainz id and what is generated in max. It is entirely possible that this disc may be a different (although not absolutely unpopular) pressing, but that suggests it should have a new diskid. How are those submitted to Musicbrainz? I have tried, but can't figure that out.

Also, if you would like to see the entire set, search in musicbrainz for beethoven, and search within results for berg.

Thanks again, I very much appreciate this help

Hi,

have the same problem with 1334. No results from querying musicbrainz.

I need to start 0.7.1, read the CD-information, save the information, quit 0.7.1, start 0.8b (1334), and continue....

Have you tried to restore the Musicbrainz-Code from 0.7.1?
