Least and Most compressible tracks in Apple Lossless

Post by chux » Sat Nov 03, 2007 12:36 pm

My least compressible track so far has been Sadame, by Japanese band High Rise at 1392kbps in MAX's Apple Lossless format. The greatly compressible have been Stephan von Huene's "Extended Schwitters" at 202 kbps, and "Reprise of the infernal machine" by Sh-Man-Tra at 176kb/s , as reported by iTunes. To be fair both of the tracks sound like they were done an Amiga 500. Anything with long periods of silence will also come out with a low bit rate (not surprisingly), as indeed do many tracks by Oval!

Any others care to report?

My numbers, for music files that is (I have test tone files down to 2kbps)...
Most = 297kbps. "Grieg: Stemninger Op.73, No.4 (Folketone)" - Leif Ove Andsnes
Least = 1179kbps. "The Unvaluable Darkness" - Dimmu Borgir

On the other scale I have a file at 6470kbps as well. A 24bit, 192.000Khz jazz track.
