FLAC to AIFF doubling file size

Post by Growlgrowl » Sun Feb 03, 2013 3:24 pm

I convert files from FLAC to AIFF quite a lot as I use iTunes. I have the encoder set to 16 bit and the sound quality is perfect but this doubles the file size.
I've tried changing to 8 bit but then there is a background hiss on the music track, while the file size slightly shrinks from the FLAC file size.

Is there something I'm getting wrong? Is there something else I could be doing that will get me the same sound quality but allow me to use iTunes/iPod, e.g. select a different file type.

Cheers.

FLAC is a compressed format and AIFF isn't, so it isn't surprising that the AIFFs are larger- if they weren't it would be a surprise. Apple Lossless is also a compressed format and is supported by iPods, so it would be worth trying.

Ah Ok that explains it.

I'll try Apple Lossless.

Cheers

OK so this is probably a stupid question…but can I convert my AIFF files (that were converted from FLACs) into Apple Lossless with no loss of quality?

It all sounds good to my untrained ear!

Yes, the formats you've mentioned are all lossless so the conversion will result in identical audio.
