... Tag doesn't save changes and displays a funny alert stating "The file can't be saved because it's not an XY (flac, aiff, mp4, whatever) file" (but it is!)

I assume that is because the file is open in another application and thus can't be written. I'll have to check the way the error messages are determined, but it's likely that if the file open fails Tag assumes it is a file type error.

... anything can be done to allow editing of open (yes: in another application) files? I mean... I'm editing a tag, not the "music" ;-)

thanks and... don't get mad at "fixing" what Tag displays as alert

Depending on the file's format editing a tag could require a rewrite of the entire file including the audio data. So there is no way to safely save a file in Tag while another application is reading it, because the entire file could change out from underneath the other app.
