Some files refuse to load/play.

Post by Fuga » Sun Feb 22, 2015 11:19 pm

Short story/question ...
Who knows what invisible file Decibel creates?

Long story/question ...
I am losing my mind. I have a very small percentage of files that will not load into Decibel. To make it worse is that this happens only under my user account. More, whatever causes it it is being selective.

For example, I have a set of files. All were originally a set of FLACs of a ripped CD. I decided to convert to ALAC. To be clear: a set of FLACs created at the same time using the same settings converted to a set of ALACs, all at the same time using the same settings (XLD). Some of the files will load into Decibel but some won't! They do under any other user.

More, the same issue happens on a different machine. But my user there was originally clones (though at least a year ago) from my user on this the primary machine, so that's not altogether strange.

BTW, it does not matter if the files are loaded using File > Add Tracks or using the iTunes plugin, so any issue with the iTunes library is moot.

I have tried:
- a clean install of Decibel -- nope
- reconverting from the original FLACs (using XLD) -- nope
- loading the original FLACs -- yep
- reconverting from the original FLACs (using Max) -- yep

So, there is SOMETHING about Decibel and my user account for only some XLD files, and not even whole batches of files. I could understand if a batch converted at 10:30 PM on a full moon would not load. But some of them and not others?!

Thankfully it's a very small percentage so far, overall. That is, once I noted the issue I went ahead and used the iTunes plugin to load a small sh1tload of files (12,000+) and 500+ refused to load. So overall, a smallish percentage. But per subset/CD it varies greatly - one CD's worth of file has 2 of 10 loading, another CD's worth might be 6 of 12 loading. Those loading or not is consistent in each attempt.

I'm sorta sorry for going on and on. It's just a lot has been going through my mind relating to this.

The only thing I can think might be at issue is an invisible Decibel file (or other) that doesn't get trashed before doing a supposed clean install. Does anyone know what invisible Decibel files I might try to get rid of?

Thank you for any consideration.

I'm having a similar problem, described below. As respect to your problem, perhaps it would be useful if you pasted the log you get when trying to add one of the files. For that, you have to enable logging (instructions on this forum), and for a clear display, just open decibel, try to add a problematic file, and then open the log and inspect it.

I remember being unable to add certain files in the past, I will certainly dig into whenever it happens again. For the moment, I've identified some files I can actually import but won't play in decibel. Specifically, I'll paste the log for a Mono 96kHZ flac file that plays perfectly on other players:

The track appears to be playing, but there is no sound. I believe the problem might be related to the multichannel map section, since for other files that seems to be routed differently.
Hope this can be addressed!

I am having a similar problem. Some mp3 files do not play in the current version. In the previous one the play fine, however, now they do show up, and they seem to play, but there is no audio output. Other files work fine.

I had asked this question earlier in the forum, but it never showed up as approved.
