need advise on which settings to use

Post by craniotomy » Mon Mar 13, 2006 12:08 am

Thanks for the advise. I have learned a lot about these things in the past few days. What I still do not understand is this.

I've decided to build my back-up library with AIFF files. I can encode them from I tunes, but Max offers more options into how to encode them. Is Itunes ok, or should I use max? Question is, which setting is best, are any too good- meaning they can actually degrade the sound?? 8 bits, 16bits, 32 bits, signed, unsigned, gsm, u law, A law, 64 bit float, etc? Any advice on what settings to use would be helpful.

Thanks,
Matt

I would use 16-bit signed integer files- this is the way it comes off CDs.

Thank you very much. Do you know if that's the same that I-tunes uses?

I'm not sure- to find out, you could always rip a track to AIFF in iTunes and then open it in QuickTime player, and Get Info on the file. That should tell you the kind of file it is.
