AIFF (apple) versus AIFF (core audio)

Post by brianr » Tue Sep 05, 2006 8:22 pm

I noticed in the available output formats, there are multiple AIFF entries.

AIFF / Source Core Audio
and
AIFF (Apple/SGI) / Source libsnfile

i am using a mac laptop, OS 10.4.7 and want to do acurrate ripping of CDs to AIFF, and decoding of lossless compressed files like flac and ape to AIFF.

is there any difference between these two formats? if so which should i use?

aslo when i use the AIFF (Apple / SGI) setting, with default Encoder setting of "signed 16 bit PCM", i notice the finder lists the resulting files as "AIFC audio file"s.

does the finder seeing the file as AIFC rather than AIFF mean I am doing something wrong? I don't want to inadvertently be creating compressed audio files.

thanks

I'm pretty sure the libsndfile AIFF is uncompressed- there honestly should not be a difference between the audio in the Core Audio AIFF vs. the libsndfile AIFF. If you want to check and see if it the file generated by libsndfile is indeed compressed, you can open it with QuickTime Player and show the file's information.
