Why does the Ripper highlight the last track...

rather than the first (or currently ripping) track, causing me to have to scroll to the top to see the ripping progress? Am I doing something wrong?

No, you're not doing anything wrong. It is the default behavior. You should be able to click the Progress column header to sort by that field, which would hopefully queue new tracks below the active ones.
