Best Optical Drives and Comparison Ripper

What are approved/recommended/preferred optical drives for use with Max?

Question 2:
How can I tell on a Mac if my drive caches audio?

Question 3:
Will the Comparison Ripper work if your drive does not cache audio?

What is the best way to achieve a 'secure' rip with Max if you have a new CD?

What is the best way to achieve a 'secure' rip with Max if you have a slightly worn CD?

What is the best way to achieve a 'secure' rip with Max if you have a CD in poor condition?

1. There is no such list I'm aware of. The best drive, period, for ripping audio CDs based on my experience with many drives many hundreds of discs in various states of health is the Plextor PX-230A

2. The easiest way to check is actually by Googling for information relevant to the make and model of drive you have

3. It should actually work better this way

4. By using a known good CD reader and any of the rippers in Max

5. By using a known good CD reader and probably the paranoia ripper in Max

Note: There still is no secure ripping in OS X. You pretty much need Windows for that. Therefore it's practically impossible to make any sort of ripping guide or set of best practices for digital audio extraction under OS X.
