Problem Converting 24bit FLAC files

Post by jumpercable » Mon May 18, 2009 10:20 pm

Hi,

Whenever I try to convert 24bit FLAC files (regardless of the source) to AAC (Maximum quality, 320 bitrate, VBR), I get the following error:

"The call to ExtAudioFileSetProperty failed".

I never encounter conversion errors with any other type of file.

I'm using the latest version -- 0.8.1

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks,
JC

There were some 24-bit fixes I've committed recently. Are you able to build from the source repository?

Hi,

Sorry, I'm kind of a newbie, so I'm not sure what you mean by "build from the source repository". Are you talking about creating FLAC files? If so, no, I've never done that. I'm just converting files I've downloaded from torrents.

Thanks,
JC.

No, I meant compile Max from source code. There is an untable version (r1381) available at http://files.sbooth.org - does that version exhibit the problem as well?

I'd like to try compiling it as suggested, but I'm not sure I can. Apparently, Xcode 3.1 only runs on Leopard, and I'm still running Tiger. Your "What is Max?" page says "command-line tools" is another option, but I'm not familiar with that approach (I'm no developer, just a user). If it's not too much to ask, could you please explain the command-line approach to compiling Max, or point me in the right direction?

Thanks again,
JC

Have you tried the unstable version r1381 that Stephen (sbooth) mentioned? It is a fully build version, no need to build it yourself.
http://files.sbooth.org/Max-r1381.tar.bz2

(In this context, "unstable" does not mean that the application is unstable, it just refers to a intermediate (not yet release) version.)

I'll give it a try and see if it helps.

Thanks all,

I've just posted Max-r1384 at http://files.sbooth.org Would you be able to test with that version as well?

Hi,

The only file I see with the number "1384" is a tar archive. When I download it and try to open it, I get an error stating that my system doesn't have the application to open the file....?

Sorry about that, I mistyped the extension- it should have been .bz2, not .bzr. I've fixed the file so you can re-download it or just change the extension of the one you've downloaded. You should have BOMArchiveHelper which can extract tar files.

Still no luck. One thing I noticed: when I went into Max --> Preferences --> Formats after downloading the 1384 version, the configured output formats were exactly the same as with the old Max I had on my system. Shouldn't everything be back to the default settings? It appears the new install is accessing some folders from the older installed version. Perhaps I never completely uninstalled the older version. To uninstall, don't I just trash the Max icon in the Applications folder, and the Max folder under Applications Support?

Thanks,
JC

You seem surprised. Never upgraded an application before? A new version of an application will normally read the existing preferences files and support files. Usually there is no need to remove all those files (and loose your settings and data) to make use of changes (including bug fixes) in the new version.

Apparently Max-r1384 does not solve your problem.

Uh, yes, I have upgraded applications before. My concern there was perhaps something in the saved preferences was responsible for the error. I thought that, if I could erase everything Max-related from my computer and install 1384, my problem might be resolved.
