Query about ReplayGain implementation

Post by smiler » Thu Sep 27, 2007 10:49 pm

Hello all,

Most of my library was scanned using Foobar2000 (0.9 something) before I switched to Mac OS X, and the files seem to be missing the 'Reference Loudness' ReplayGain tag. What does Play do in this case?
Regards,
smiler =)

Play: 0.1.3b (r.964)
Max: 0.7.1
Music collection: FLAC, AAC-LC (160k VBR for iPod)

Currently Play doesn't use the reference loudness, so you are fine if your files are missing the value. In the future I may add functionality to ensure that all replay gain adjustments are performed to the same reference level (89 dB for FLAC and LAME MP3s) if it becomes an issue. I'm not aware of any RG scanners that don't use 89 dB as the base for their loudness calculations, though.

Ah, thank you for putting my mind at rest. I was worried that Play was ignoring the ReplayGain tags on these files.

I've noticed that some albums sound louder than others, even when they both have RG tags and RG is enabled. I can only assume this is my choice of "Reduce pre-amplification" over "Hard limit". I'll try hard limiting and see if I notice a change. :)
