cue file for flac not working (works in Cog) + some question

Post by ginopalletta » Fri Jan 30, 2009 8:49 pm

hello,
i am a new user since two days ago, and i like the program, though i would like to discuss some issues:

-i have a cue file for a flac long track which is not working in Play (i can only see the big flac file and not the single tracks), but it perfectly works in Cog. Can somebody have a look at it? how can i submit it here?

-Play is much more sensible than Cog to cpu loads, and often the sound is interrupted for some milliseconds, or i can hear clicks while switching spaces or exposè, or switching apps. Do you recommend sspecial settings for the sample buffer? i tryed to swith off Replay Gain to lower realtime processing, to no advantage. Overall Cog is much more responsive, i see in Play i also have a lag between pressing play button and hearing sound (same for stop). Also Cog has a much higher output volume, while Play's is comparable to output volume of iTunes, which has always been much lower than Cog's for me.

-last.fm seems broken in 1077 (no scrobbling, nothing appears in last.fm interface client), while was working (with some glitches though) is 0.3 stable release

-in the play queue, how can i sort by track number (or whatever) to listen to tracks in the proper order?

many thanks for the help and your software!
giuseppe

sorry i browsed for some answers to my questions, and some were already out there:

-ok for lags and clicks during playback i have doubled both values that appar in the preference pane regarding the buffer sizes, and it seems to be better by a quick first impression.

-about sorting tracks in the play queue, i understand it is not possible by desing, although it would be nice to have a command...

this leaves me with:
--the cue problem,
--and last.fm broken, has anyone out there suffered this issue with release 1077 and the official last.fm client? (was working with stable 0.3)

thanks

ok, i am ashamed!
about last.fm!! simply activate it via the preferences...

sorry about that, it was on by default in the 0.3 stable release (or maybe not) but i switched to 1077 them and just now realized it somehow had switched off the option in the preferences.

sorry...

about the non working cue file, i paste it here, maybe someone could give it a look? is there anything wrong with it? how come it does work with Cog?
thanks
giuseppe

If you open the .cue file using Play, what happens? Are any error messages displayed?

no error messages displayed, and the long flac track appears in the library, just the one long file, not split into tracks. Is there some log file in some place i sholud look for for more verbose error messages or warnings?

i am investigating this a bit, and my preliminary conclusion is that it has happened since i tagged the split tracks somehow (i tagged them with musicbrainz picard i think). In fact i noticed the same behaviour in another file: i was able to to import the split tracks both in play and musicbrainz picard. Then i tagged them by hand by selecting them all and changing the details in picard. I think that since then, both play and picard just ignore the .cue file, and maybe try to use the tagged metadata stored inside the .flac? (just a guess)

i tryed to remove the metadata from the .flac with picard, but i cannot revert to play or picard being able to use the .cue again!!!

thanks for the assistance

solved!

not related to metadata (sorry)

i had to download a texteditor which supports character format conversions, then "reopen as UTF-8" and save it over as UTF-8. There was some bad character not showing up, or the .cue file was not (any more?) UTF-8.

Cog's parser seems more robust then... Still this is a minor issue, once you know it!

Is there a log file telling why Play refused to open or couldn't correctly parse a .cue file?

thanks a lot for this software, i am really starting to enjoy it!

sorry to hype the forum, but i just wanted to comment also that Play (and Cog too!) refuse to read a .cue file if the line break (end of line character) is changed to CR or LF only. It seems it must be CRLF (a là Windows).

so i guess this is the standard for cue files (odd thing i shall add)
