New icons for Play

Post by sbooth » Tue Apr 15, 2008 9:06 pm

Aaron Christianson has generously created several new icons for Play. They are all good, so I thought I would post them here for some user reactions and comments!

Not sure about #3.

Others are good.

#2 has my vote...

EDIT: Kinda off-topic but related - how about a name change? To something less generic than "Play"? It would make it much easier for people to google / troubleshoot / etc if it was a less generic name...

I prefer the existing icon, but between these new ones I like #2 best.

Don't change the existing one! Not with the one shown above.

Hey all, I'm the one responsible for these apparently unpopular icons (don't worry, I'm not fragile about it).

The reason I wanted to work on new icons for play is because the current icon looks, to me, like a cheap rip-off of iTunes. I thought something a little more original would be better.

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for what they would like to see in a play.app icon. If an artist is working on behalf of a group, feedback is the thing that really allows the artist to work beyond his/her own small vision. Good feedback includes being specific about what you don't like, as well as listing so things that you would like to see. If you have a picture or a link to a style or motif that you would like to see integrated into an icon, that is also helpful.

Thanks,
Aaron

I like the actual icon.

Changing the name is perhaps a better idea. Looking for Play in search engines is not an easy task.

I loathe the current icon... in fact, of the 100+ apps installed on my system it is only one of 3 I felt compelled to change myself. (fwiw, ffmpegx and soulseex are the other two offenders)

With #1, I'd suggest offering a number of color combinations, especially a few in "cooler" shades as most os x desktop themes I see posted is screen shots lean towards the black/red, black/blue, white/blue, blue/grey end of the color spectrum.

I think #1 and #2 would be an enormous facelift. I prefer number 1, but if the name stays the same, then #2 makes more sense.

On that note, I agree that another name will definitely help users search this (potentially) great alternative player out.

Just off the top of my head, and perhaps already in use...

XPlay
XPlayer
PlayerX
AudiOSX
AudioX
Audioz
Sound
XTunes

Lastly, the only way to get a real feel for what people like is a poll... it's been proven that most people will avoid attaching their identity to a publicly posted opinion, especially once a particular trend (however small) has been established.

Oh, and definitely post MUCH smaller images, as that is how they will
be seen 99.9% of the time. Even well liked icons would incite an entirely
different reaction when viewed on such a dramatically different scale.
