Replay Gain scan never completes

Post by chipbutty » Sat Mar 08, 2008 12:33 pm

I've converted my CD library to FLAC with Max. In Play I've selected my entire library and scanned as Album. Around 300 albums. I get the scanning in progress message but the entire process stops after around half an hour with just the first two albums having replay gain tags. The scanning in progress message is still there but there is no activity. I've tried this a few times and the same thing happens. Any ideas? I'm on 10.4.11

Can you scan one album at a time to try and determine if one file is causing problems? Are there any messages in the Console log? The RG algorithm in Play only works with 44.1 KHz audio- do you have any audio that didn't come from CDs?

Well, I'd like to give you an answer to that but I'm having more problems - though I'm sure they're all 44.1 khz. I thought I'd start from scratch by deleting Library.sqlite3 and rescanning the library. Just a superstition of mine. But now when adding to the library that also crashes before completing. There is the Play crash log from earlier today, though it's from when it crashed during replay gain scanning and not the problem I now have rescanning the library. I can post that but it is huge. To try and remedy all of this I have uninstalled Play and reinstalled but it still crashed on scanning the library.

If you can send or post a crash log that would help narrow it down. You could also try deleting the preferences, although that shouldn't matter.

I've emailed you as the crash log was too big to post. Thanks.

This may be more specific. Play crashes each time when replaygain scanning and I get a system message telling me to restart my computer. When booting back in the panic log is open with the following. :?

That is not a simple crash, that is a kernel panic.

Yep, looks like I need to do some investigating. I'm fairly new to macs.I guess running the Apple Hardware test is a good place to start. Feel free to chip in with advice.

Any non-Apple installed memory in your machine?

I did replace the memory a month ago. Exactly the same spec. To try and eliminate the memory as the source of the problem I have just removed the new RAM sticks and installed the old one. The same thing happened again, though this time it just froze and I didn't get the Kernel Panic message. The same thing also happens with the new memory; Play freezes each time but not always with a system message. Doesn't appear that the RAM is an issue? I also downloaded memtest earlier but I've not run it yet.

- The same thing happening while using different memory makes memory as cause of the problem less probable. Still, testing memory sometimes reveals unexpected memory problems.

- Which version of Play are you using?

- Have you tried removing the preferences file? ~/Library/Preferences/org.sbooth.Play.plist
(Remove a plist file while the application is not running, else the old data will be written back to the new plist file.)

- Have you tried adding or scanning the music files in smaller batches, for instance one album at a time? If the problem is caused by some of the music files, the problem will occur only when those files are included in the action.

- If Play freezes (which is not necessarily the same as crashing) without taking the system down in a kernel panic, have you checked possible information logged in console.log or Play.crash.log?
(Launch /Applications/Utilities/Console to view all logs.)

- Do you have any utilities running that patch other running applications? (Like, for instance, APE depended utilities.)

Thanks Ronald. I'm using the latest unstable build. I experienced the same problem in 0.3.

Yes I've tried removing the preferences file.

I'm now scanning the library in smaller batches and so far everything is fine. I'm around halfway through. Interestingly I started doing it by genre and that was fine until I scanned the genre with most songs and it froze again. No Kernel panic, just a freeze. I re-scanned that genre in smaller batches and it was fine.

I've looked at the Play crash log. Nothing in there makes much sense to me! Is there anything I should be looking for?

As far as I'm aware I don't have any other utilities running that patch other applications.

Information in the logs usually does not make much sense to us mere mortals, but the developer may find the cause for a crash in it. That's why Stephen (sbooth) asked to send or post a crash log. You did send him a crash log, didn't you? If the 'freezing' is not really a crash, information in the console.log may be useful for detecting a problem.

BTW: Restarting because of a system crash was daily routine in the old days, but having repeated kernel panics is not normal nowadays, certainly not in a perfectly stable mature version of the OS (10.4.11 in this case). I have not had a kernel panic in years.

Yes, I sent the log to Stephen. Hopefully there are some clues in there. I found a couple of lines in the console log which could help.

Just a hunch but could this be related to running low on RAM? Earlier I set Play to scan replay gain on ten albums, probably around 140 tracks. I had Activity Monitor open and I could see the amount of free RAM getting less and less as the scan continued. When it got down to around 18MB free I had another kernel panic. I restarted the Mac and made sure I had no applications open other than Play, I set the replay gain scan on the ten albums again and kept an eye on activity monitor. At the beginning of the scan I had 1.5GB free (I have 2GB in total), as the scan neared completion it went down to 25mb. This time the scan completed successfully and the replay gain tags have been written. Seems as though the scan stores the values in RAM then writes the values to the music files upon completion?

I have my music files on an external drive. I wonder if that's part of the issue :?:
