Replaygain...

Post by ddoonie » Thu Feb 07, 2008 1:57 pm

First off, thank you for this software... I have been looking for something similar to foobar for OS X for a long time... I just wanted to ask a few questions regarding the replaygain. Right now, all new music i convert i am running through foobar to get the replay gain info, as when i do so in Play, ONLY the album gain is recognized by other programs (ie Rockbox) for me. Is there any way i can convert the scans done by Play to similar tags as those made by foobar? I'm trying to ease out of all of these steps, and just scan my music and play it.

Thanks for your time!

Darryl

I am assuming you mean file format, and it is mp3's. Thanks for your time...

There is much more information on this topic in this thread. In short, Play writes ID3v2.4 tags, while RockBox only handles (I believe) ID3v2.3.

Yes i did read that thread, i was just curious if there was any other way i could write these 2.4tags to 2.3 tags? I use other sound apps as well for djing which seems to work best with 2.3 tags also.

Thanks

Play uses TagLib to handle MP3 tagging, and it only writes v2.4 tags. Thus writing v2.3 tags is not possible with TagLib, and I don't have plans at the moment to add any other ID3 implementations.

Thanks for your help... I have no clue where this 'hiccup' is occuring. Rockbox creators were stating that the program does read v2.4, as foobar writes v2.4 and reads theirs flawlessly...

I requested some more info from the rockbox crew, and at these early stages they believe it may be that there is only one value written to the RVA2 frame, the album value... does this help in the slightest?

Play writes both RVA2 and TXXX tags for the replay gain. As far as I know the TXXX tags written by Play are the same as those written by foobar, and include both track and album gain. For the RVA2 tags, what identification string does RockBox look for? I looked back over the source and Play only writes either album or track gain to the RVA2 frame, but not both. It is possible to write both, but I'm not sure what identifier to use. Perhaps it is just "replaygain_album_gain" and "replaygain_track_gain". Maybe your source at RockBox could clarify, and I would be happy to add a patch fixing this.

from everything i have read thus far, those strings will solve my issues... Thank you once again for your time! a side question, have you/or do you plan on implementing a way to write the replaygain to the iTunNORM files?

Thanks a lot, and i assure you i will inform everyone of this program, esp. since there are no other replaygain writing programs for mac!!

I've committed changes in svn that read and write RVA2 frames with identification of "replaygain_track_gain" and "replaygain_album_gain". Hopefully those are what RockBox is looking for.

I haven't posted a new build yet. I'm compiling r1076 currently and will upload it soon.
