Re: iTunes metadata for AIFF?

I'm afraid my last comment wasn't very constructive. Jhart's idea to first convert to apple lossless and then with Max to mp3 is indeed very good and the only workaround I can see. I tried to adapt the 'Get Itunes Metadata' script but the 'File Conversion' window is not scriptable, so it really only...

Re: iTunes metadata for AIFF?

Sorry, but iTunes does store metadata in aiffs. You can check it out by searching for the relevant text in a hex editor. iTunes even stores album art (jpegs) in it. With wavs it is different: wav files can hold metadata, but that's not very common and iTunes doesn't do it.

Re: Lossless CD archiving

Hello barnz, Interesting observations. I, too, found that uncompressed sounds better than losslessly compressed. I am not going so far as to use 32 bit (as the original data on the cd is 16 bit), but I use 16 bit wav, as in my listening 16 bit aiff doesn't sound as good. I think you're right when yo...

Applescript for Sample Rate Conversion

Hello! Following the discussion in the thread about 'High Definition Audio' ( http://forums.sbooth.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2080 ) I rewrote an Applescript that I used to do sample rate conversion (src) with and I thought I could share it. It's a simple frontend to some open source tools. I have now...

Re: High Definition Audio

I don't know anything about the PC, sorry. On the thread I mentioned someone from Apple wrote: (1) We have made some significant improvements to the sample rate converter in Leopard - so if you want re-evaluate it, that would be very helpful. We've also added a new property to allow for the selectio...

Re: upgrade lame quality settings (question)

Thanks for your reply! You could call the new setting "max" (appropriately).

Re: upgrade lame quality settings (question)

I've been rethinking. .. maybe my suggestion wouldn't be so good, as q=2 generally stands for 'high' in lame.
lame -h (for 'high') is the same as lame -q 2 , so it is probably better to leave it as it is. But still, a setting for - q 0 would
be great, I think. Maybe ... _QUALITY_HIGHEST = 0???

Re: High Definition Audio

A little update: After some investigating, I found that this is an issue that seems to be taken seriously by some serious people. Most interesting was the following thread on Apple developer: "Quality of CoreAudio SRC (SRC = Sample rate converter)" http://lists.apple.com/archives/coreaudio-api/2008/...

upgrade lame quality settings (question)

I just thought it would be nice to be able to select the highest lame quality (q=0). With the following source code change: --- Max-0.8.1-source/Encoders/MP3Encoder.old.m 2008-04-27 00:17:30.000000000 +0200 +++ Max-0.8.1-source/Encoders/MP3Encoder.m 2008-06-02 10:35:21.000000000 +0200 @@ -296,10 +29...

Re: High Definition Audio

Yes, I think you're absolutely right in the assessment of the situation. It's system dependent, but at the same time it's universal, because nowadays almost everyone has high definition audio with their computers with soundcards that sound best at their highest sampling rate, while probably more tha...

Re: High Definition Audio

I may be a little late in this thread, but anyway, I have put up an example on rapidshare ( http://rapidshare.com/files/117618773/resample_to_96khz__example_.rar.html ). It's a small piece from a cd (one minute). I have included the original (16bit, 44.1khz) and a version of the same, but resampled ...

Re: High Definition Audio

Hi! I'm a long-time mac-user and I've been asking myself the same question as the orignal poster, and it really seems to be an interesting one (aka sample rate changes). My observation is that sample rate changes are in fact influencing (negatively) the final sound quality. That is, when the file pl...
